SUBJECT : New tourism shelter at Kakkayam soon

Kozhikode, March 8th: The constructions works of the District Tourism Promotion Council’s new wayside shelter in the picturesque eco tourism destination of Kakkayam will be completed by March 31. Work is now on in full swing to provide short-stay facilities for tourists in its three spacious floors.

Kitco — a government-owned consultancy firm — has been entrusted with the work. The roof-top will be designed in such a way as to make use of the space as view point for sightseers.

Facilities such as visitors’ gallery, VIP suit rooms, dormitory and comfort stations will be provided at the shelter. On completion of the second phase, more amenities are likely to come up at the spot.

The project got a fillip after one of the local people contributed land for realising the project.

According to officials, the building is coming up on 15 cents land donated by the man. In the second phase, more entertainment facilities too are likely to be provided in the area.

The Kakayam- Peruvannamoozhi tourism masterplan is in the implementation phase and the government will spend around Rs.1.9 crore for the completion.

Local body members from the area say the hydel tourism project opened under the Kerala Hydel Tourism Centre, a subsidiary of the Kerala State Electricity Board, too is luring more tourists to the centre.

The boat service and adventure bicycle ride started at the catchments area of the Kakkayam reservoir have literally spiced up the business in the area, they said.
