SUBJECT : Wayanad beckons tourists with new destinations

Kalpetta, March 5th: More tourist spots will enter the tourism map of Wayanad with the opening of three tourism destinations in the hill station, one of the emerging tourism destinations in the State.

The new tourism projects – the Priyadarshini Tea Environs at Pancharakolly, Wayanad Adventure Camp on the shores of Karlad Lake, and the Kanthanpara waterfalls near Mepadi – will be opened to the public on Saturday, District Collector Kesavendrakumar said.

The Wayanad Adventure Camp, the first of its kind in south India, has been set up at a cost of Rs.1 crore on 13.4 acres near Karlad Lake. It would provide facilities for various adventure sports activities such as zip line, kayaking, climbing on rock panel, paint ball, archery, and land zorbing.

The District Tourism Promotion Council has taken special safety measures for tourist at the Kanthanpara waterfalls in Mupainadu grama panchayat, besides setting up a view point, toilet facilities, car parking and an office building at the destination at a cost of Rs.50 lakh.

The Priyadarshini Tea Environs at Pancharakolly has been set up at a cost of Rs.1.50 lakh at the Priyadarshini tea estate, a cooperative society for the rehabilitation of the bonded tribal people of the district. A tea museum is the major attraction of the project.

Mr. Kesavendrakumar said the district administration was planning to launch more new packages to woo foreign tourists. It was planning to develop new mobile web applications for the overall development of the tourism sector. The applications would provide all the necessary information to the tourists on the destinations in the district.

Bus services would be launched for safari in Muthanga and Tholpetty eco-tourism centres under the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary soon, he added.
