November 15, 2017: With the onset of winter, paddy harvesting has begun in different parts of Sikkim. Traditionally called ‘Dai’, stacks of harvested paddy are thrashed on the ground and crushed by oxen encircling a bamboo pole before the entire grain is extracted from the hay. Paddy is then winnowed and stocked and hay stacked in ‘Kunew,’ as a year round source of fodder for cattle.
