SUBJECT : Environmentalists took out a rally, Save Western Ghats, from Kanyakumari to Suchindram on Wednesday

Kanyakumari, November 2, 2017: Environmentalists took out a rally, Save Western Ghats, from Kanyakumari to Suchindram on Wednesday. According to them, the 'padayatra' was a reminder to the one which was conducted on the same day 30 years ago.

They added that the objectives of the yatra is to create environmental awareness, to secure knowledge on the prevailing situation of Western Ghats, to expose young scholars to Western Ghats, to coordinate all voluntary organizations to form long term common ecological action programmes, to encourage and motivate academic institutions to undertake afforestation programmes and to create effective coordination between voluntary organizations, government agencies, academicians and educational institutions to solve environmental problems.

The padayatris consist of environmentalists from Maharastra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. D Saravanan of Aranya in Tamil Nadu, C D Suneesh and Guruvayurappan from Kerala, Panduranga Hegde from Karnataka and Kumar Kalananth Mani from Goa led the discussions at the earlier sessions.

S S Davidson, environmental educator and Dr P Samraj, soil scientist, coordinated the awareness programmmes. "Such rallies will be undertaken in other parts of the Ghats at specific intervals," Davidson said. The various flora and fauna and the issues of the Western Ghats were highlighted in a photo exhibition in Kanyakumari.
