Packages earlier declared under the Green Carpet scheme for northern Kerala will be an added advantage for the new initiative, they said.

The Irrigation Department will be one of the major partners in the venture as it has got several scenic locations under its possession in Peruvannamoozhi and Kakkayam. The department will prepare a detailed project report to submit to the State government. Irrigation Minister Mathew T. Thomas, who recently visited the locations, had come up with suggestions to boost tourism in the region.

The officials said farm tourism initiatives and homestay ventures will be encouraged. Projects that can further exploit the trekking and water tourism potentials of the region will be considered. Eighty per cent of the revenue generated from the project will be spent for the development of the region and the rest of the profit will be shared by the tourism and irrigation departments.

At present, the DMCs are active in tourism projects at Kappad, Vadakara, Thusharagiri, Sarovaram Biopark and Sargaalaya Crafts Village in the district.
