Gangtok, December 17, 2017: The 1st Sikkim Paragliding Red Panda International Accuracy Open Championship commenced from Sunday here at Khelgaon, Reshitang, about 12 km away from Gangtok.

The spot landing tournament is organized by Sikkim Paragliding Association (SPA) and approved by Federation of Aeronautic International (FAI) CAT II. Tourism minister Ugen T Gyasto Bhutia declared the tournament open.

Ninety four pilots from seven nations are taking part in the international championship which concludes on December 21. The participants are from Kazakhstan, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Switzerland, Nepal and India.

Sikkim is represented by 25 participants including three female paragliding pilots.

The competitors would be judged on their accuracy while landing at the designated spot in Khelgaon ground. They will take-off from Anne Gumpa Ranka Hilltop situated at an altitude 1450m and about 1 km far away from the landing spot.

Congratulating the organizers, the Tourism minister expressed his happiness on seeing participants from different parts of the world competing in Sikkim. The championship will definitely promote Sikkim Tourism and we are hopeful to see more participation in coming years, he said.

International paragliding pilot Violeta Masteikiene expressed her happiness to be in Sikkim and to take part in the completion. She is also the meet director.

SPA president Raj Kumar Subba said the association wants to promote aerial sports and adventure tourism of Sikkim. We will also promote organic farming of Sikkim through this Championship, he said.

Area MLA D.R. Thapa, who is also the chief patron of the tournament, MLA B.B. Rai, Tourism secretary C. Zangpo, SPA members, participants and others were present at the inaugural function.
