Guwahati, May 28, 2018: The Assam State Zoo will launch its trek club with an inaugural journey on Sunday morning.

The divisional forest officer of Assam State Zoo, Tejas Mariswamy, said it would take around two hours to complete the 5km trek.

"The route will have moderate elevation passing through a moist deciduous forest. This will not only give opportunity to be one with nature but also provide spellbinding sights of nature and biodiversity," he said.

The inaugural trek will start around 6.30am.

Mariswamy said two zoo personnel will accompany the participants.

He said a subscription fee of Rs 1,000 will be charged for annual membership of the trek club.

"We plan to organise trekking twice a month - on first and third Sundays - on the zoo campus spread across 175 hectares. We will try to provide the trekkers the best possible experience and expect them to be respectful towards nature," he added.

The DFO said they also have plans to open a literary club in the zoo by involving litterateurs and to set up a library on the campus.

By taking these initiatives, the zoo authorities hope to bring people closer to the zoo.

In November last year, visitors were allowed to cycle inside the zoo campus for the first time. Visitors can hire bicycles at the rate of Rs 30 per hour at the zoo.
