Gangtok, October 23, 2018: Chief Minister Pawan Chamling on Tuesday said the world now recognizes Sikkim as a global model in sustainable organic farming, which in turn, has heaped humongous responsibility on the people of Sikkim.

“Sikkim has been recognized by the entire world. A strong message from Sikkim has gone to the world with the Future Policy gold award received by Sikkim (as the world’s 100% organic State). The world is seeing Sikkim as a model which has brought enormous responsibility upon us. We must take this seriously. The world has named us as organic people that also bring huge opportunity for the people of Sikkim,” said the Chief Minister.

Chamling was addressing the gathering of SDF workers and functionaries who had turned out in huge numbers to welcome him at the border town of Rangpo. He was returning to Sikkim after receiving the UN Future Policy Gold Award at Rome last week.

The prestigious award, as previously reported, was presented to Sikkim for its organic farming success. In his speech at Rangpo, the Chief Minister said the global brand of Sikkim as an organic State must be integrated with every aspect of sector in Sikkim including tourism. We must strengthen our organic farming mission; he said appealing all the people of Sikkim and SDF cadre to take up the responsibility of sustaining the organic brand.

The Chief Minister recorded his congratulations and gratitude to farmers of Sikkim for the global award that Sikkim received in organic farming. He also thanked and congratulated the people of Sikkim, Agriculture department, traders for their cooperation, elected representatives and the party workers.

Chamling pointed out that organic farming in other parts of the world is done as a hobby or interest by agriculturalists and scientists. In Sikkim, organic farming is being done as part of the government programme whereas no other governments in the world have made organic farming as a government programme, he shared. Sikkim has given a message to the world that an organic world is possible, he added.

Chamling also commented on the 6th JRD Tata Memorial Award conferred by The Population Foundation of India at New Delhi to Sikkim as the best performing State under ‘high focus category-North East’.

The award was presented on October 12 on the basis of index of 35 indicators with strong bearing on reproductive health, gender equity, family planning, water, sanitation and hygiene, women’s empowerment, gender-based violence and fertility of the population.

We received the JRD Tata Memorial Award on the basis of our  work done in health sector, the award recognized Sikkim as the best performing State in the entire country in health sector , said Chamling. People of Sikkim should understand that the State government has done better than other States in health sector, he added.

The Chief Minister directed the SDF workers to sensitize the people of Sikkim on this and not to allow them to be misguided.
