June 30, 2019: As we pack our bags and gear up for those epic summer vacations, there is a new wave of tourism that has attracted young and old alike. An attempt to immerse oneself in the culture and environment of the space, eco-tourism gives a more realistic experience to the traveller looking for the real deal. Imagine spending time exploring lush jungles, and hidden waterfalls, as you meet friendly locals. The return journey is to a charming local homestay, where you are served a simple, yet flavourful meal, prepared in the local style, with freshly procured fruits and vegetables. Waking up to birdsong and your own personal view. The very definition of travel now has changed to a more intimate experience.

As the world wakes up to the need for conservation and learning to live in sync with our environment, the idea of a vacation has also changed. The concept of spending time locked up in a luxury resort, without a sense of the world around is no longer something that many people wish to do. As the numbers for domestic and International tourists rise, across the length and breadth of the country, eco-tourism is a solution that benefits all concerned. Over the years, this concept has evolved to offer eco-homestays, a simpler way to have the most immersive holiday possible.

There are many reasons that have contributed to this. To begin with, travel itself has undergone a rapid change. Most holiday goers want to go to unexplored areas from mountains, to jungles and lakes. Many of these areas fall under eco-sensitive zones which cannot support stress or pressure from modern constructions. A home stay gives visitors a multi-dimensional experience, while remaining a simpler alternative to large format five-star hotels.

It also offers a chance for visitors to live in a space, like the locals. This is a more enriching experience that a tick off on tourist spots. A lot of eco-sensitive home stays have also managed to create simple eco-systems around the resort. These help visitors understand the geography as well as the ecology of the space. Exposure to local natives who manage these home stays, allow visitors to get valued insights into their culture as well as get a sample of life as they live. As tourism in India grows, people are looking for intimate and simple experiences which will help them get to know local culture, cuisine and art, in ways that they can never experience if they stay in units that would be isolated islands.

India’s diversity also ensures that each eco home stay offers a different experience to the visitor. From the majestic jungles of Coorg, to the majestic ruins of Hampi, to the mist laden valleys in the hills, each space offers a unique experience. An eco-home stay gives a glimpse into the everyday world that surrounds each place.

A lot of travellers today, are mindful of the local population and their livelihoods. Eco Homestays are not just an immersive and sensitive experience for the travellers but also help local populances with a sustained livelihood. We have often seen live changed across our resorts, when we create opportunities of employment for the local population around. The interaction is also enriched, as most people are charmed to understand the nuances of local culture, cuisine and art.
