Gangtok, July 5, 2020: Raigoan Samaj of Lower Burtuk conducted a daylong plantation, cleanliness and awareness drive at Raigaon, Lower Burtuk here today as a part of Van Mahotsav and ‘ A Day for Mother Earth’ programme of State government.

The programme began with a brief prayer service and a memorial plantation in memory of Late Hem Bahadur Rai (DFO) followed by avenue plantation of about 50 flowering tree species, informs a press release.

Likewise, a cleanup drive was carried out along the road and Jhoras with active participation of youth and elderly residents of the village. An awareness drive was also conducted strictly following social distancing on the importance of Van Mahotsav and green good deed activities for ‘A Day for Mother Earth’ Programme scheduled for july 7.

Blue- coloured waste recycling bins were distributed to five newly opened shops at Raigaon village. Saplings of medicinal plant Gurjo were also distributed to elderly people for taking up plantation at respective households along with hand gloves and face masks.

The people of Raigaon thanked Forest and Environment department, particularly to director (ENVIS) B.B. Gurung, joint director (FCA) Blen Tshering Targain, DFO (NTFP) Yangchen Bhutia,  ACF (Research) Chewang Tashi Bhutia and range officer ( Gangtok Territorial) Anuj Gurung for providing essential materials for the campaign. The programme was conducted and coordinated by Sikkim ENVIS Hub of the Forest department.
