RorathangMaghayMela, a collective production of five constituencies in East Sikkim, is geared up to give a stiff challenge to the traditional MakarSankrati affair at Jorethang in South District.
MaghayMela has been annually a mega event atJorethang where people from different parts of the State and neighbouring Darjeeling hills gather in thousands to welcome the slow event of warm days. However, attention will also be shifted towards East this time where Namcheybong, West Pandam,Rhenock,Chujachen and Gnathang-Machong constituencies have teamed up to organize the Hindu festival in a traditional manner.
The RorathangMagheyMela, reviewed as ‘VisudhaSanskritikMela’along the banks of Rorathang river near Rangpo will be a 3-day affair starting from from 13 and conclusion on January 15,informed tourism minister BhimDhungal.
Dhungel is also the area MLA of Rhenock and patron of RorathangMagheymela organizing committee.”We have decided to review the MagheyMela at Rorathang after the senior villages felt that the heritage event of this place was being neglected.TheMagheyMela at Rorathang is a heritage event and we aim to preserve it”, he said.
The MagheyMela at Rorathang used to be held annually in past where locals from Namcheybong, Pakyong ,Pacheykhani, Rhenock, Biring,Machong, Lingtam and Aritar used to gather. Over the years, the RorathangMagheyMela has lost out to other places in Sikkim where the festival were more vigorously celebrated.
“The Magheymela at Rorathang aims to revitalize our culture and tradition. RorathangMagheyMela has a distinct identity as compared to MagheyMelas in others parts of the state.People from nearby areas will take a dip at Rorathangriver and pray. We want to preserve thistradition”,saidDhungel.
A bamboo Lingey ping, a heritage of MagheyMela, will be set up at the venue of the organizing committee. Traditional cuisine is also one of the main attractions at RorathangMagheyMela besides cultural programmes .Exhibition of agricultural produce is also being finalised.
Paragliding is also added to the event by the organizing committee which is aiming to integrate tourism with RorathangMagheyMela.
“The importance of this region will also increase with such events. Tourists visit Nathu La and Aritar and by adding RorathangMagheyMela, the locals can offer more to tourists.
We are respecting the sentiments of the locals and the State government will extend its support” said the tourism minister.
