Rare and threatened mammal species

Tiger (Panthera Tigris): Tigers are reported to migrate from West Bengal or Bhutan into Sikkim. Normally they enter the state from Lava Forest (West Bengal) towards North East Sikkim and nay be found in Rachela, Tal Lagyap Reserve Forest, Temze Reserve Forest, Kabi, Phensong, Phadong, Ringu, Tong Reserve Forest, Chyakung Reserve Forest, Khudun, Lewa, Lachung, Dambong, Karponang, Yumthang, Dzongu, Melli. Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Snow Leopard (Uncia uncia): Lashar Vally, Yumesamdng,Cho Lamo, near Thangu, Sabu La, Lhonak Valley, Youmcho, Seokun, Bamchona, Chulung Valley, Nimphu, Kishongla, Rithong, Thosa, Lamphokori, Dudhpokhri, Muguthang. Status: schedule I(WPA,1991).

Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulos): Manpur, Kerabari, Kitam, Dzongu, Rhenok, Barapathing, Sombaria, Baua, 6th Mile (Ranipool). Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Leopard Cat (Felis bengalensis horsfieldi): KNP. Satus: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Red Panda (Ailurus fulgens): Lachung Valley, Lachen, KNP, Tong RF, Tamzo, Kyongnosia, Zuluk, Padamchen, Pangolakha, Fambong Lho, Maenam, Hillay, Barsay, Okhray, Tilling, Tholungand Kishongla. Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Kiang or Tibetan Wild Ass (Equus kiang polydon): Chho Lanho plateau, Gyamtsona, Chulung Valley, Yumcho, Kerang,Chulung La, Bamchho La, Sesse LA Oloten, Gurugongmar, Donkyala. Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Titetan Sheep or Nayan (Ovis ammon hodgsoni): Bamchhona, Gyamtsona, kerang, Chulung Valley, Cha La, Lhonak Valley, Giagong area south of the plateau, Oloten and KNP. Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Shapi or Eastern Himalayan Tahr
(Hemitragus jemhalicus schaeferi):
Endemic to Sikkim. Found in Fimphu, Manangdang (Bikmatar), above Rahi chu (Satdharay), Ruketchu, Ribangthang, Niphu, Tsingnok, Linjob,KNP, Aralung chowk and Gomnay. Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Takin (Budorcas Taxicolor taxicolor): Reported from Nimphu, Pangolakhs and Rachela. Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Tibetan Antilope or Chiru( Pantaholpos hodgsona) : Chho Lhamo and Lhonak Valley. Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Tibetan Gazella (Procapra picticaudata picticaudata): Chho Lhamo along Chhomo Chu Gyamsona and Changri meadow. Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).

Sikkim Stag Cervus elphas wallichii: possibly extinct in Sikkim as it was last sighted in Pangolakha area. Status: Schedule I(WPA,1991).
