The beautiful environs of the town are known to seduce and attract people with its calming and equally thrilling appeal, thus deriving its name as the 'Yoga Capital of the World'. It is said that great sage Raibhaya did severe penance here and as a reward, God appeared to him in the form of Hrishikesh, hence the name of this place in Uttarakhand.

Over the ages, a lot of historically significant people have spent a lot of time here, each resulting in their own different rediscovery. Back in the 1960s Rishikesh gained instant fame as the site where ‘The Beatles’ came to stay with their guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to meditate and study yoga, during which they wrote an album depicting a new aspect to the band's composition.

Rishikesh has numerous ashrams, some of which are internationally recognized as centers of philosophical studies, yoga and meditation.
