Abstract

Ecotourism is increasingly recognized as a community development tool with significant economic contribution. This paper examines local economic development of destination communities especially the tribals in forest regions through a case study of Parambikulam Tiger Reserve in Kerela, India. The study explores the benefits (economic & non economic) enjoyed by local community members through active participation of ecotourism programmes. It also reveals that community intervention in ecotourism has helped to reduce their excessive dependence on forest resources for their livelihood. Moreover the park authorities and communities have made strong foundation for ensuring other dimensions of sustainability like conservation of natural and cultural resources for an enhanced well being.
